Diet unfortunately this for letter word has gotten a llot of bad press, so they switched it to lifestyle choice or its not a diet but a lifestyle. Well I hat to break it to everyone, but regardless if it is a lifestyle choice or diet it still involves giving up your favorite foods. Now Im all for eating healthy, I think on a whole, we all eat way to much junk food. I dont care how you label it, candy, fast food, empty calories, it is bad for you and we eat too much of it. However, there is an even bigger problem out there than diet, lifestyle or junk food. It is our mentality that everything has to be an all or nothing event, what I mean by this is simple.
Lets take an imaginary dieter, he has found that over the holidays he has put on 10 pounds, so he decides to go on a diet, well this means out with all of the junk food and maybe a low carb diet, or one of those weird diets that you find in those magazines at the check-out line at your local grocery store. You know the ones, the apple diet, the eat soup all day diet and lose weight, etc.
Well, lets flash forward, its been two weeks and our imaginary dieter is going crazy the cravings are getting to him, so what happens, one day he cracks and has some pizza for dinner.
Fine however, since our imaginary dieter feels that he has blown it he might as well have that candy bar he has been saving, and well I havent had any ice cream in a while so Ill have some, and on and on.
Do you see where Im getting at, it is either he is on the diet or he is off, and there is no middle ground.
Now lets take this same dieter and go back there, lets say he has some pizza for dinner, for the simple reason that pizza is what he has been craving.
O.K., but instead of blowing it on every piece of junk food he has hidden in his house, he decides to go for a walk, after all he has been meaning to return that over due library book, and heck he could use the walk, especially after the pizza.
So he grabs his book and heads out, sure it turns out to be a longer walk that he anticipates, but between walking there and back, plus the walking he did at the library while looking for another book, how much weight do you think in gained back from the pizza, probably not much.
My point with this article was to illustrate that just because you are on a diet it does not mean you cant treat yourself to some junk food once in a while, as long as you dont go crazy.
